We believe all students have unlimited potential and the natural desire to acquire a love of learning. Those abilities and desires can be greatly affected by a child’s earliest experiences in school. It is our goal to provide a foundation for academic, social, and spiritual development that meets the needs of each individual child.
Peachtree Corners Kindergarten is an extension of our outstanding weekday Preschool Program. With over 30 years of excellence, our half-day program offers a child centered approach to learning through a structured curriculum delivered in a loving Christ focused environment.
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
The K classroom environment is a child’s first impression of the traditional school experience. It should be warm and welcoming in appearance. The environment should stimulate learning and provide multiple opportunities for active engagement. Teachers are the key to a nurturing environment that promotes active engagement and learning. Peachtree Corners strives to provide developmentally appropriate experiences that encourage optimal learning at every stage in a child’s life. Our teachers focus on the individual characteristics of each child and work to create classrooms that are rich in experiences and significant to children.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Our language arts program in kindergarten is based on the Orton Gillingham approach. The phonetically based reading instruction is multi-sensory, utilizing visual, auditory and kinesthetic activities. Phonological and phonemic awareness are taught in small groups. Guided Reading is also incorporated in the classroom. Handwriting Without Tears is used to teach handwriting. Students practice writing through journals and group writing.
MATHEMATICS
We focus on developing a strong foundation of basic math skills through the implementation of an extensive curriculum, use of manipulatives, and real life application of concepts and skills. Patterns, money/coins, shapes, calendar, measurement, sequencing, graphing, and basic addition and subtraction are some of the skills taught in kindergarten.
SCIENCE
PCBC has a fully equipped science lab designed specifically for the early learner. Students are encouraged to explore their world through observation and experimentation. The teacher takes advantage of a child’s natural curiosity and offers learning activities that lend to exploration and discovery. Animals, seasons, and weather are just a few of the topics that students will be exploring in science.
MUSIC
In Kindergarten, children will sing, play instruments and move to music. Activities are designed to introduce the student to the artistic foundations of music. Research continues to show the many educational benefits of music instruction. Latest research indicates that young children involved in consistent music instruction have a greater ability to grasp concepts that are essential to the understanding of math and science. All Kindergarten students participate in at least 3 school music productions.
Physical Education
Educating children about the importance of physical fitness has become a nationwide initiative. Children in kindergarten practice fitness skills and work to develop sportsmanship and social/emotional skills. Students in P.E. learn locomotor and non-locomotor activities and how to manipulate objects. These fundamental movements form the basis for all movement experiences and are used throughout a lifetime.
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
The primary goal of Christian Education is to make the Word of God meaningful to children. Learning Bible stories from the Old and New Testament helps students apply God’s Word to their lives. Chapel is held weekly to highlight specific Bible stories and to get children excited about praising God. Daily devotions are held in the classroom and the curriculum is presented from a Biblical worldview. Character development is addressed using the Bible as our main resource. Kindness, respect, trustworthiness, honesty, generosity, friendship, responsibility, etc., are examples of some of the character traits we might discuss throughout the year.
KINDERGARTEN CARES (SERVICE CLUB)
Students actively engage in service projects that focus on helping others in need. Food banks, Meals on Wheels, Samaritan’s Purse, etc., are a few of the service projects we have adopted. Reviewing service opportunities, brainstorming for ideas, and delegating responsibilities are leadership skills that our Kindergarten children get to experience when working on these projects.
CURRICULUM ENHANCEMENT
A variety of hands on activities are planned to engage children in the curriculum. After a unit of study is completed, a culminating activity is planned to highlight unit objectives. Animal/Science, Fire Safety, Read to Succeed, Dental Health, Dr. Seuss’s Read Across America Day, Author studies, U.S. States, Georgia, and Mexico are just a few of the favorite themes studied in Kindergarten. The students look forward to the fun and educational experiences that are designed to expand and reinforce learning.
Preschool
Weekday Preschool provides a quality-based program in a Christian environment while striving to meet the needs of children as they develop emotionally, physically, cognitively and spiritually.
Preschool classes are designed for children aged 2-4. They include an environment created for children to learn as they play, curriculum specific to individual age groups, hands-on experiences that teach, a loving and nurturing environment, and quality teaching staff. Music and physical education classes complete our well-rounded curriculum.
